Silkie Bantams

Silkie Bantams

Silkie Bantams are a unique chicken in their own. Lacking barbicles in their feathers they have a very soft feel to them. So soft infact they earned their name, Silkie. Their feathers lack the water restancey of other breeds and if left in the elements can become very wet. The Silkies uniquness doesn't stop with their feathers. They also have five distinctive toes on each foot. In addition they have a dark, almost blue skin from beak to toe. Their comb included is a blueish purple color. Unlike many breeds comb the silkie has a 'rose' comb often described as a walnut or brain shape. They are a dark meat chicken with dark bones included.

Silkies are known for brooding. Many breeders of chickens who will not brood keep silkie hens around to brood eggs for them. They make great mother hens to their chicks as well.
