The Common Ringneck Pheasant

(Phasianus colchicus)

Pheasants are some of the most incredibly ornate game birds that can be found. Their striking colors and beauty have helped make the ring-neck the most hunted game bird in the United States. They are even the official state bird of South Dakota. Originating in Asia pheasants were introduced prior to the 1800's. There are nearly 30 subspecies currently.
In many areas the feral Ring-neck pheasant populations have been depleted by predators and over hunting and captive raise birds now make up the majority of the populations.
