Valley Quail

California Valley Quail

(Callipepla californica)

California Valley Quail seem to be what many people think of when they hear the word Quail. A male carry six distinct feathers on his head that slightly droop over in front of his face. They are native to the South Western United States. Living in coveys most of the year the pairs separate from the group to hatch their chicks. Valley quail usually hatch just one clutch of eggs a year, but on occasion the female will leave her young with the male and mate with yet another male to have a second clutch.

Average Weight: 6-7 oz

Hatching Time: 23 days
